RESUMO:

An ostomate is someone who has undergone a surgery that results in the creation of a stoma. The terms ‘stomas’, ‘ostomates’, ‘ostomies’, and ‘ostomists’ come from the Greek word ‘stóma’ which means mouth or opening of any hollow viscus on the exterior of the body by means of surgery with the purpose of fulfilling a need of elimination or eating. Therefore, the ostomy might bring some limitations concerning life ideations given that the physical changesaffect the physiological field and reach the psychosocial field, which demand, from this person, an adaptation to the new reality. For that reason, nurses can rely on theoretical models that focus on the Systematization of Nursing Care (SNC) when taking care of this group of patients. Based on that, a nursing theory example that can be used whenassisting ostomates is the Roy’s Adaptation Model, which constitutes the basis to the understanding of the individual as a system capable of adapting itself. This study aims to seek validity evidences of the Scale of the Ostomate’s Adaptation Level (SOAL). This work consists of a methodological study of SOAL’s validation which will be developed in four stages: the first one refers to the theoretical pole constituted of two rounds of submission of the instrument to judges, pilot testing, and lexical and grammatical correction; the second stage refers to the experimental pole that includes the planning of the instrument application, application itself and data collection; the third stage refers to the analytical pole which consists of the statistical analysis to be made; finally, the fourth stage addresses the association between socio-demographic and health characteristics and SOAL’s dimensions. As a partial result of this study, 12 items received improvement suggestions in the first stage, 3 items were unified due to approach similarity and 1 item was eliminated. After adjustments in the first stage, all the judges agreed in what concerns the representativeness of the items and the permanence in the modes. The final version of the instrument consists of 32 items. We expect that the results of this research may contribute to the development of the professional nursing training and practice, thus, improving the adaptation of the ostomate.
