The proposal of the Graduate Program in Demography of UFRN seeks an integrated approach between demographic analysis and methodological approaches that allow to expand the knowledge about the social, political and economic processes, etc., in view of population problems. Demography, as an inter-multidisciplinary scientific field, develops from the deep knowledge of the ways of measuring, estimating and managing population data while seeking to analyze and discuss socioeconomic problems.

It is expected that the research activities conducted in the dissertations and theses combine formal demography and the quantitative techniques with the various specific theoretical approaches to demography and to other scientific fields that deal with population studies. The studies of the demographic dynamics courses (fecundity, mortality and migration), their interfaces with other fields of knowledge, and advances in demographic techniques are priority themes.

The PPGDem is in the Capes’s evaluation area "URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING / DEMOGRAPHY". The master's degree was recommended by Capes in 2010 with grade 3 and its first group started in 2011. In 2017, in its first actual evaluation after its creation, it was awarded a grade 4 in Capes’s Quadrennial Assessment. The following year, the doctoral degree was approved with implementation of the first class in 2019.
