Presentation

The Graduate Program in Psychobiology of UFRN, received Concept 6 in its last evaluation by CAPES (year 2014), - which characterizes it as a Program of Academic Excellence.

UFRN’s Graduate Program in Psychobiology aims to train biologists, psychologists and professionals of related areas for teaching and research, with emphasis on animal behavior and its biological bases, within a multidisciplinary perspective. The Program is one of the pioneer Programs in UFRN and in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, being the only one in this area in the northeast region of the country. In 2015 the program completed 30 years of existence (master's degree 30 years and doctorate 17 years). In this sense, the PPg in Psychobiology has increasingly become a reference, especially with the operation of the doctorate, registering a growing demand of professionals coming from other programs in related areas, including teachers from institutions in the region and former students of the Program.

Throughout the consolidation of the Program there was a progressive change of focus, which directed the its efforts to the study of animal behavior, emphasizing the use of the marmoset as an experimental animal. This tendency was reinforced by the insistent suggestion of several consultants, who saw the use of the marmoset as a differential in relation to other research groups from the same field in Brazil. The greater emphasis on the study of animal behavior resulted in the use of other animal species, which began in 1997, leading to animals such as fish, cetaceans, insects and rodents, as well as humans, to become targets of study interest of the group.

Since the PPg in Psychobiology essentially belongs to a basic area, our emphasis is on research and academic production, and this group has distinguished itself by the quality of its production, with emphasis on publication in indexed international journals (see below). This has made the program become well known internationally and, due to its long tradition of working with primates, an international reference. Despite the emphasis on research, we have carried out outreach work with the wider community, and today we maintain several programs ranging from environmental education to teacher training, through to scientific dissemination. These activities occur both in the city of Natal and in the places where our teachers and students collect data, especially in the interior of the state of RN.

The PPg in Psychobiology groups four lines of research (Chronobiology, Behavioral Studies, Psychobiology of Cognitive Processes and Behavioral Endocrinology) with researchers in full activity, bringing together an expressive number of undergraduate students, many of them Fellows of IC, besides Master's students and PhD.

Since the 1990s, the Program had only one area of concentration - Behavior Studies. The maturation and consolidation of the groups motivated a reformulation of areas of concentration and disciplines that came into force in 2004. This reform opened a second area of concentration - Physiological Psychology - grouping the researchers of Chronobiology, Behavioral Endocrinology and Psychobiology of Cognitive Processes, who have been strongly supporting their work on physiological data, which brings the need for a training that emphasizes these aspects.
