PAGES: 100
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional
SUMMARY:

Contextualization: changes in muscle strength, range of motion, and scapulohumeral joint kinematics are often related to the Subacromial Pain Syndrome (SPS). However, muscle behavior in these individuals is still controversial and inconclusive. Therefore, comparing muscle behavior among individuals with SPS and asymptomatic individuals can provide information upon the potential exacerbators of the condition, and, thus, improve the understanding of the information found in shoulder assessments, contributing to a better treatment of these individuals. Objective: to compare the scapulohumeral kinematics, range of motion, muscle strength, and electromyographic activity of the shoulder muscles among asymptomatic individuals and individuals with SPS. Methodology: a cross-sectional study. Individuals of both genders between thirty-five and sixty years old diagnosed with SPS will be recruited and compared with asymptomatic individuals, divided by age, gender, BMI, and limb dominance. The range of motion will be measured using a Smartphone app called clinometer application®; the three-dimensional scapular kinematics of the shoulder complex will be carried out using a Flock of Birds® electromagnetic tracking system; the muscle strength will be measured with a Lafayette Instrument® handheld digital dynamometer; and the electromyographic amplitude will be measured using a signal conditioning module model TeleMyo (Noraxon®, USA), using passive self-adhesive surface electrodes. Expected results: it is hoped that this study will shed light upon the factors that are related to the emergence of this syndrome, and, thus, help clarify the understanding of the information found so far in the shoulder assessments, contributing to the adoption of a more specific treatment for these individuals.
