RESUMO:

Introduction: Mobility in the elderly is the ability to move from home settings to beyond the community where they live. Preservation of mobility is considered essential for active aging, being closely linked to health status and quality of life. The Living Space Mobility (VLS) restriction of community-dwelling older adults may predict the need for future health care. Contextual factors such as life history, social, environmental and personal issues are considered to be determinants for the maintenance of the living space in the elderly. Results:

Objectives: To know through a systematic review the contextual aspects that interfere or modify the SEM, and to identify the associations between Life-Space Assessment (LSA) and the adversities of the life course of the elderly in five populations with different epidemiological contexts.

Methods: A systematic review was performed according to the PROSPERO protocol, previously published. A nested cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 2000 elderly residents in 5 distinct sites (Kingston and Saint Hyacinthe in Canada, Tirana in Albania, Manizales in Colombia and Natal-RN in Brazil). Life space measures (LSA) were analyzed through multivariate analysis (multiple linear regression), adjusted for variables of physical health, mental health, social support and adversities in the course of life. Results: We observed associations between the total score of LSA with adulthood and the adversities of old age. Not having social support and experiencing life-time adversities affect mobility in the elderly Adversities in adulthood were negatively related to LSM and the adversities of old age were positively related to LSM. Social support, neighborhood characteristics (community barrier, perception of safety and social capital), health self-assessment, visual impairment, depressive symptoms, physical performance and manual grip strength are associations with the ASE total score.

Conclusion: Poor scores of mobility in the living space are related to worse contextual environmental and personal factors. Mobility in the living space is influenced by adversities in adulthood and old age, but not by adversity in childhood. Adversities in the course of adulthood are predictors of mobility restriction, and adversities in old age, social support and a favorable environment are predictors of better mobility in the living space.
