SUMMARY:

Science Teaching has undergone several changes over the years, including variations in the way of teaching. Among the various didactic approaches that have been proposed over time, we highlight in this study Teaching by Investigation. The research was carried out in a city located in the semiarid region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil, and involved elementary school teachers who teach science, biology, chemistry, physics and geography. The work sought to identify the approaches and teaching resources used by teachers in public schools in the city and characterize their conceptions of teaching through investigation. For this, semi-structured questionnaires were applied to teachers and their answers were categorized according to the Technique of elaboration and Analysis of meanings (Moreira, Simões and Porto, 2005). The results show that some teachers mention words referring to Teaching by Investigation, but not they adequately understand this didactic approach, revealing the importance of continuing education that instigates new methodologies for in-service teachers. In a second stage of the research, considering the importance of the theme of water for the place, we sought to identify general knowledge about the existing dam in the city and the previous concepts of students from Youth and Adult Education on aquatic microbiology. For this, we use semi-structured questionnaires and drawings. The results show that students have insufficient knowledge about aquatic microbiology, demonstrating that it is important to deepen studies on this topic in the classroom. Finally, we propose the elaboration of a didactic sequence on the subject in question, with the bias of teaching by investigation, to be applied to students of Youth and Adult Education. The results show that the application of the didactic sequence using the didactic approach of teaching by investigation was effective for students' understanding of microbiology.
