SUMMARY:

Zoology corresponds to an area of the life sciences that has received attention from several researchers involved with aspects of teaching and learning about animal diversity, whether as part of the contents of Science and Biology in basic education, or as a curricular component in college education. Considering that zoology constitutes an area of knowledge with an intimate relationship with the environment where organisms live and that environmental themes warrant approaches from interdisciplinary perspectives, a bibliographical research of a qualitative nature was conducted that investigated how environmental aspects were evidenced in the path of zoology studies taught to Biological Sciences undergraduate students at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Natal, Brazil, with special attention to biodiversity and its relationship with the environment. The present dissertation comprises an investigation of works published over a period of 15 years (2006 to 2020), elements of the content analysis methodology systematized by Laurence Bardin. Thus, an analysis sample covering 73 works was selected, produced by researchers and/or students linked to the curricular component called Biodiversity, from the curricular matrix of the Biological Sciences course at UFRN, as well as linked to subsequent disciplines, after changes in name along the trajectory of curricular adjustments. The selected analysis sample focused on contents that enabled the description of four categories involving environmental contextualization in the teaching of Zoology. This analysis was conducted through the discussion of the works that were considered most representative for these clarifications in the four highlighted environmental topics. It was found that, over the period of implementation of the Biodiversity curricular component (2006 to 2010), the interdisciplinary teaching of Zoology focused on studies of organisms in the field, mainly addressing awareness aspects made possible through Environmental Education, with little evidence to the legislation oriented towards the environment. Through a quantitative analysis of the sample under study, it was observed that the number of works that cited rules and regulations of environmental legislation, although small (32.87% of the total), was increasing with the over time, ranging from 22.22% in the 2006-2010 period to 75% in the 2016-2020 period. Some references to the legal aspects that regulate activities with biodiversity in situ for didactic and scientific purposes included Normative Ruling nr. 03/2014-ICMBio. As a way of contributing to the expansion of this legal approach to biodiversity, an informative material was developed as educational product, aimed mainly at students of the degree in Biological Sciences, entitled "Focus on regulation of activities in learning practices about animals”, which addresses some regulations set out in Normative Ruling nr. 03/2014-ICMBio and in the Arouca Law, which are of interest to professionals in the biological area.
