SUMMARY:

The first ideas that motivated us for this study emerged since we realized that there was a potential didactic resource at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), Campus Nova Cruz, which is the pilot plant for ethanol production. We perceived the potential to use this equipment in various disciplines of the scientific-technological axis of the Chemistry Technical Course. However, they rarely use this tool in experimental classes at that institution. To propose a solution to the problem, we initiated an interaction with the chemistry teachers at Nova Cruz Campus, through an open questionnaire, approaching possible causes that hinder the use of the pilot plant as a teaching resource. After analyzing the responses, we verified the need to develop teaching material in order to support teachers to lead experimental classes at the pilot plant. In this perspective, the main objective of this work is to foment the use of the pilot plant for the ethanol production in experimental classes for the Regional Chemistry Technologies subject of the Chemistry Technical Course. Therefore, we developed an experimental didactic sequence, centered on the ethanol production theme, using the IFRN Campus Nova Cruz pilot plant. The development of the didactic sequence was taken as a theoretical basis to the investigative experimentation and the development of skills and competences for professional training of the chemistry technician. For data collection, we used characteristic instruments of qualitative research, such as questionnaires applied to students and the interview with the teacher of the subject. The students and the teacher evaluated the activities proposed in the sequence. We also used an observation protocol and field grades during the application of activities as a way to record the skills development. We observed that the proposal gave students the most significant development of some skills, such as team work and the capacity to execute operational procedures of the production process, manipulate materials, interpret data, elaborate conclusions, discuss the obtained results and analyzing the restrictions of the experiment. In addition, we noticed the motivation by the teacher of the subject in order  to apply the sequence in the next classes.
