SUMMARY:

Multi grade classes are defined by classes of students from different communities, ages, learning curve and knowledge level (MEDEIROS, 2010), which is, they gather students from various different levels in the same class, with only one teacher responsible for conducting the pedagogic work (HAGE, 2014), having its main characteristic diversity. Our context is the teaching of Mathematics in multi grade classes in Rio Grande do Norte. Out thematic is being guided by the following question: How the teaching of mathematic in multi grade classes is happening/happened in RN? As our main objective we are working to build a historical study regarding the teaching of Mathematics in multi grade classes in the Estate of RN and as specific objectives: analyze changes and continuity of the practice of Mathematics throughout the time; perceive evidences of the vision teachers have about the teaching of Mathematics; and elaborate an Iconographic Book with Educational Product, required by the Professional Master, to be disseminated, analyzed and used by other teachers involved with the teaching in non-formal spaces. Our research has qualitative character and matched distinct methodological procedures to compose the sources of the analyzed data; which are: documental research, in field research, semi structured interviews and observations. As partial results, we can point out evidence that teachers have a hard time teaching Mathematics in a multi grade class, due to the class diversity, having in mind they begin with concrete material, beginning from a simple content to a more complex one; they perceive multiplication table as a support source to overcome students challenges in calculations. On the other hand, other teachers believe it is easier to teach Mathematics in multi grade classes than other subjects, due to the fact they can use daily applications as a resource to the teaching. We emphasize this is an in progress research; all the data are being analyzed in way they will not just tell histories of the teachings, but also help us to get a vision of how this teaching is done in multi grade classes in our state.
