SUMMARY:

The development of biofuels to reduce consumption of petroleum sources for the transport sector. It has been encouraged, due to environmental problems caused, limitation of hydrocarbon resources, implementation of exhortation policies for the use of renewable energies and restricted legislation on carbon emissions. Considering the alternative sources of biofuels available, biodiesel production has a prominent place in postmodern society. Industrially, transesterification is the most used reaction to obtain biodiesel, obtaining fatty acid esters (biodiesel) and glycerol, as products. Due to the presence of glycerol, additional purification processes are necessary, which cause an increase in costs and production time for the final purified biodiesel, in addition to generating large volumes of effluents. Thus, problems associated with conventional biodiesel purification methods resulted in the exploration of new technologies to carry out this stage of the production process. The application of membranes has attracted considerable attention, being a very promising area, for achieving highly qualified biodiesel. The process has high separation efficiency, is environmentally safe, requires little energy expenditure and is operationally simple and flexible. In this context, this dissertation aims to evaluate the applicability of separation process using polymeric membranes in the purification of biodiesel, through the assembly of a bench system, as well as the formulation of biodiesel blends and subsequent separation and purification using the technology of membranes. This work is divided into defined steps. Initially, the bench system will be built and the membranes to be used in the separation process will be characterized. Next, it is intended to carry out tests with membrane coupling for biodiesel purification and characterization of biodiesel and byproducts. Finally, modeling and simulation will be carried out, aiming to optimize the process.
