SUMMARY:

Waste is present in industrial processes, therefore, the use of this waste for a purpose other than disposal, generates a new line of destination and sustainable development in processes. In this way, this work aims to show the potential that kaolin waste can have as an adsorbent acting in the removal of food dyes present in industrial waste. For this, kaolin waste was obtained from an industry in Ecuador/RN, subsequently, the characterization of this waste was carried out with granulometry, FRX, DRX and SEM analyses. Next, pellets were manufactured in the proportion of 10 g of kaolin waste and 3 ml of water, these pellets were calcined at 800 °C for 2 hours with a heating rate of 10 °C/min, and a system was prepared adsorption with readily available and laboratory materials such as test tubes, PET bottles and faucets. Thus, column tests were carried out with Tartrazine Yellow and Red 40 dyes. It was verified, in the characterization, that the main mineral in the waste is kaolinite and that the manufactured pellets were resistant to the passage of the solution. During the column tests, it was noted that the adsorption flow rate is an important factor in the process, as well as the resistance of the pellets. Finally, it is considered that the process has its advantages and that more column tests with constant flow and recycle can bring more complementary results.
