SUMMARY:

In the research project, it is proposed to evaluate microalgae as fuel in the gasification process by chemical cycles. The microalgae have a high capacity for CO2 biofixation during cultivation, being one of the most promising carbon capture and utilization techniques in the category. In the process of producing biofuels derived from microalgae, after the cultivation stage, the oil rich in lipids is extracted from the microalgal biomass using solvents, which then undergoes conversion processes (transesterification, hydroprocessing, etc.) producing biodiesel, BioQAV or green diesel. This process generates a residue containing a high content of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids that, like the microalgae (fresh or lyophilized), can be used to produce heat, electricity, synthesis gas or hydrogen through processes with chemical recirculation (combustion or gasification). Thus, the objective of the study is to convert microalgae into bioenergy with CO2 capture through the process of chemical recirculation using oxygen carriers (TO) based on inorganic waste. This proposal for a doctoral project will be developed in four stages, ranging from the characterization of biomass, characterization of TO, evaluation of TO reactivity in a chemical cycle balance and application of the material in batch and continuous reactors (TRL 5). Part of the experiments will be carried out at the Institute of Carbochemistry - ICB (Zaragoza-Spain).
