SUMMARY:

Considering the existing problem regarding the generation of large amounts of industrial effluents, mainly from the oil industry and its derivatives, the vast amount of contaminants with toxicological, carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, and the possible negative impacts that these may have cause on human health and the environment, treatment techniques in order to degrade these contaminants should be studied. Therefore, this work aims to carry out a study on the treatment of water artificially contaminated by phenol, through an Advanced Oxidative Process (AOP), of the heterogeneous type, using sodium persulfate, as an oxidant, and zero valence iron (ZVI) as catalyst supported in biochar (BC) - (BC/ZVI). In addition to this type of AOP, experimental plans of the homogeneous and heterogeneous type were also carried out with other catalysts, seeking to compare the results of the different degradation rates obtained in each one of them. From the experimental designs carried out, the best performance obtained was the one that used BC/ZVI as a catalyst, reaching a degradation of 92.57%, with experimental conditions of [PS] = 13 mM and [BC/ZVI] = 7 g.L^-1 and pH = 3.0. ANOVA and response surface evaluations were made and, with them, it was possible to characterize the models obtained, from the experimental data, as significant or not, in addition to making it possible to study the effect of the variables analyzed in the process.
