SUMMARY:

World pollution has increased dramatically due to global and industrial growth. The
aquatic environment is one of the most affected, being found many different types of
pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, plastics and, potentially, dyes, which cause pH
and temperature variation, increase chemical oxygen demand and decrease biochemical
oxygen demand. as well as coloring the waters. These dyes have an organic nature and are
resistant to conventional treatments, requiring the application of more effective processes
such as Advanced Oxidative Processes (AOP's). The POA's cover a wide range of different
methods, among which are methods that use semiconductor catalysts to generate hydroxyl
radicals (HO•), which can be ferrites. Ferrites have a general formula, MFe2O4, and are
chemically and mechanically stable magnetic materials, where M represents cations of
divalent metals and can be represented by a mixture of them in order to improve the
properties of the materials. Based on this, the present master's dissertation proposal aims to
use mixed copper and nickel ferrites (NixCu1-xFe2O4), in different proportions (x = 0; 0.2;
0.4; 0.6; 0 , 8 and 1), to photocatalytically degrade the Rhodamine B dye, simulating an
industrial effluent containing dye, in order to verify which material is most effective in the
degradation. Therefore, the mixed ferrites of copper and nickel should be synthesized through
the combined EDTA-Citrate complexation method, according to the methodology developed
by Rodrigues (2020), later it is intended to characterize the samples by XRD, Ritveld
Refinement , SEM-FEG, FT-IR and ERD UV-Vis. After that, a series of tests should be
started to define the most efficient approach to degradation of Rhodamine B dye, namely:
autodegradation, photolysis, adsorption, photocatalysis, fenton and photo-fenton, hoping that
the photocatalytic degradations are more efficient. . Finally, an experimental design must be
applied in order to find the optimal reaction conditions, and a demonstrative experiment must
be applied to validate the experimental design.
