SUMMARY:

The waste that may be present in the industrial process, a by-product of the process for which there is no economic interest, must have a predestined purpose and within environmental conditions. However, with technological innovations, the use of tailings for a purpose other than disposal grows more and more, this transformation adds value to the tailings, as it will change from something useless to something that will now be useful. . Many environmental impacts can occur with the neglected destination of the tailings, as well as the recent disasters that happened in Brazil in the cities of Minas Gerais (MG): Mariana in 2015 and Brumadinho in 2019, in which, in both situations, a tailings dam from mining broke up releasing high loads of mud resulting in an environmental tragedy with many deaths. In Rio Grande do Norte, the Seridó region is one of the notable mining centers due to its characteristic aspect of the region, which is rich in mineral deposits. In this region, there is the city of Ecuador where there are companies that work in the extraction of kaolin. In a study carried out by Santos (2015), he found that the kaolin processing industries have great value in relation to the generation of jobs in the municipality of Ecuador, however, they cause several environmental impacts such as deforestation, erosion and soil pollution. Faced with this problem and in order to give another bias to the tailings, this work aims to take advantage of the kaolin tailings from a mining industry in Rio Grande do Norte and use it as a material for the production of an adsorbent that will be used for the removal of food dyes.
