SUMMARY:

The Brazilian semiarid, in certain periods, suffer from water scarcity in the region. In addition to insufficient rainfall, another factor that contributes to this scenario is the presence of shallow crystalline soils, which affect the storage of water in underground aquifers. However, even if stored in large quantities in underground aquifers, due to the high amount of salts, the water becomes unfit for human consumption. According to Ordinance 2.914/2011 of the Ministry of Health, in the long term, water with a high amount of ions in solution may cause health complications for individuals who consume it. In order to solve this problem, the use of desalination techniques for the treatment of brackish water is recommended. The present study will be carried out based on physicochemical data of water from wells located in the community of Boa-Fé in Mossoró/RN, based on data collected by Antas (2017) and will propose a strategy for recovering the salts and obtaining water suitable for consumption. Then, a fractional crystallization study will be carried out based on solid-liquid equilibrium diagrams, applied to the NaCl-CaCl2-H2O system at different operating temperatures (50°C and 75°C). Among the suggested strategies, the one that showed the best results was the process that made use of the mixture of temperatures and the dilution of the output current. This strategy resulted in a recovery of 97.09% NaCl and 94.82% CaCl2.2H2O. After defining the route that presented the best salt recovery rate, the fractional crystallization process was simulated in the SPECS v5.63© program, in order to carry out a comparative study between both methodologies and to validate the strategy established through the equilibria diagrams. The simulation, which in its calculations used the UNIQUAC thermodynamic model and the SRK equation of state, showed recovery of 89.04% of NaCl and 81.07% of CaCl2.2H2O. The comparative study carried out revealed a difference of 11.15% between both methods. In conclusion, it was verified that the suggested strategy is efficient in the recovery of salts and in the desalination of the brackish water of the investigated well.
