SUMMARY:

The Brazilian semiarid region, with its alternation between periods of drought and floods, suffers, in certain periods, from the lack of water in the region. However, in addition to the scarcity of rainfall, another factor that contributes to the situation is the presence of shallow depth crystalline soils, which make it difficult to store water in underground
aquifers. The western region of Rio Grande do Norte is composed, for the most part, of crystalline rocks and groundwater with high salinity content. Therefore, even when stored in considerable quantities in underground aquifers, due to its high amount of salts, the water becomes unfit for human consumption. To resolve this impasse, the use of desalinizes is an alternative for the region. Desalinizers, however, have a stream (tailings) of water highly concentrated in salts which, if released arbitrarily into the environment, can cause considerable environmental impacts. Thus, to reduce harmful effects on the environment, a proposal for the recovery and use of salts will be developed in this work. For this, the modeling and simulation of a crystallization process will be carried out based on Physico-chemical data from wells located in rural areas of western Rio Grande do Norte, based on data collected by Antas (2017). Finally, to reduce operating costs and make the project more economically viable, the system will be coupled to solar energy and, taking into account the economic perspective, a strategy for valuing the salts obtained from the crystallization.
