SUMMARY:

The presence of drugs and heavy metals in wastewater, groundwater and soil is dangerous and very toxic to ecosystems and human life, especially when present at levels above the permitted limit. Both pollutants are resistant to biodegradation, causing serious damage to living organisms and photosynthetic activities. Therefore, it is necessary to use treatment methods that are able to remove such pollutants at acceptable levels before disposal. The use of surfactants can be a viable alternative to remove these pollutants. In this work, it is proposed to use the base soap in ionic flocculation for the removal of drugs and hormones. Ionic flocculation is based on the reaction of surfactant with a divalent metal giving rise to an insoluble surfactant, which under agitation, they aggregate to form flakes capable of attracting organic matter through adsorption. An innovative approach to the process will be to use the waste from the electroplating industry as a source of metal and thus, it is expected to remove emerging contaminants and heavy metals present in the synthetic effluent in a single process. It is also planned to evaluate the process in terms of the influence of temperature, concentration of surfactant and contaminant, agitation speed, contact time, temperature and pH. Thus, it is expected that the use of this technique can configure an alternative for the treatment with regard to the removal of drug and hormone and simultaneously of heavy metals present in effluents.
