SUMMARY:

The world is in constant development and modernization, and one of the effects is the use of fossil fuels, which has generated a crisis in the reserves of these fuels, and mainly has caused environmental impacts due to their burning. Biodiesel is derived from renewable resources has been making it more appealing for the environment. It can be produced by transesterification reaction of several triglycerides (oils), alcohol and a catalyst. The calcium oxide (CaO) has been demonstrated to be promising in catalyzing transesterification due to its high catalytic activity. To avoid mass transfer limitations that slow the reaction, it is common to use a co-solvent. Thus, this work aims to evaluate the use of the surfactant NonylPhenol EthOxylates (NPnEO) for the methyl transesterification reaction of soybean oil catalyzed by CaO, itself derived from chicken eggshell. To the best of our knowledge such reaction involving surfactant was never reported previously in open literature. The surfactants will be applied in the transesterification reaction according to the critical micellar concentration and the reaction parameters: time, catalyst concentration and alcohol to oil ratio will be evaluated through a 2³ experimental design. The oils obtained will be tested in an internal combustion diesel engine to assess consumption and gas emissions. Finally, the life cycle assessment of the biodiesel production process will be carried out.
