SUMMARY:

Microalgae are biomass promising for obtaining of third generation (3G) biofuels because they are able to accumulate substantial amounts of lipids in their cells that can be converted to biofuels using processes such as transesterification, esterification and thermal cracking. The main advantages of using microalgae compared to other biomasses is the fact that their crops have high productivity, do not require on arable land, do not compete with food sources, and are carbon neutral because they have great capabilities of CO2 biofixing. Given this perspective, this work aims to evaluate the microalgae of the species Monoraphidium sp. obtained by intensives outdoor cultivation, and to characterize their lipid content, in order to determine their potential for 3G biofuels production. The biomass were characterized by technical analytical instruments (TGA / DTG; FT-IR; FT-NIR and Py-GC / MS), aiming future applications in fast and reliable prediction of lipid content (TL) in microalgae. Preliminary results of the characterization show biomass that have high protein content (20.05 - 34.81%) and ashes (13.02 - 33.29%). In relation to the TL, obtained by Schmid-Bondzynski-Ratzlaff’s method, the results range from 8 - 21%. Lipid extracts present a profile of fatty acids rich in C16: 0, C16: 4, C18: 2, C18: 3 and C18: 4, and the presence of triglycerides and free fatty acid were identified by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). Analytical pyrolysis of biomass before and after extraction and of the oil was also performed, in order to evaluate the potential for biofuel generation through this process. The results proved the energy potential of the Monoraphidium sp. for the production of 3G biofuels by converting oil into biodiesel or aviation bio-kerosene, as well as applying biomass after extraction into bioproducts such as biofertilizer. The high protein content of this biomass also indicates its potential for animal nutrition.
