RESUMO:

The toxicity, non-biodegradability and bioaccumulation of industrial effluents rich in heavy metals has become a major environmental concern. In view of this fact, several treatment techniques are already in place to remove heavy metals from industrial effluents, but they have some disadvantages, such as inefficiency in treatment, high cost, use of chemicals in treatment and problems with disposal of the sludge formed. Based on this finding, there have been researches with materials that can be used in the treatment of effluents and that present low cost, good efficiency in the removal of metals in low concentrations, does not promote the formation of sludge, which is abundant in nature and has good capacity of regeneration. In order to meet this demand and to present satisfactory results in the removal of heavy metals in aquatic environments, this study used the carnauba straw powder and bentonite in its natural forms and modified as an adsorbent for the removal of copper in aqueous solution. The experiments were carried out by evaluating the influence of some operational variables, such as solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal concentration, binder and co-ion effects on metal removal efficiency and regeneration of the adsorbent. From the experimental data it was possible to make the kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium study of the batch adsorption process. FTIR, BET, FRX, XRD and Zeta Potential analyzes were also performed to characterize the materials used in the adsorption process and ensure the efficiency of their modifications. In the adsorption studies it was observed that in general, the adsorbents used presented a fast kinetics, and they conformed to the kinetic model of pseudo second order, and as for the adsorption equilibrium model the adjustment of the data was directed to the Langmuir model . The studies showed that although the materials presented low surface area in their natural forms, they presented other advantages such as functional groups that interacted well with the metals, in this case the carnauba straw powder, and good cation exchange capacity in the case of bentonite. Both the carnauba straw powder and bentonite presented better results in their adsorption capacity from their modifications.
