RESUMO:

Carbonization is a thermochemical process of converting biomass to energy with neutral CO₂ emissions. However, one of the major challenges of this process is to make it sustainable, since two other products besides charcoal are produced: non-condensable gas and liquid. The gas is easier to reuse because it can be used in the heating of the system, while the liquid, also called pyroligneous extract, has high chemical instability due to its complex composition, including toxic organic compounds, and cannot be used immediately after collection, or disposed of in the untreated environment. Thus, the objective of this work is to characterize a distilled fraction obtained in the carbonization of Jurema Preta (Mimosa tenuiflora), and to evaluate its commercial potential according to the results obtained. The pyroligneous extract fractions obtained in the carbonization process at 300 and 400 °C were rotoevaporated at 75 °C in vacuum for further analysis by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer (GC-MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Preliminary results show that the Mimosa tenuiflora pyroligneous acid extract is rich in acetic acid and phenolic compounds. The solvents used, dichloromethane and methanol, were able to concentrate considerably the phase rich in phenolic compounds and the acid phase, respectively, where phenolic compounds are widely used by industry as antioxidants and additives for fuel, and organic acids used as precursors of chemicals.
