RESUMO:

The dependence of diesel on the world transportation sector and the ever-increasing global energy demand for non-renewable and finite fuel makes the search for renewable energy options an essential area of study. The biodiesel of vegetal origin is its main alternative and is synthesize through alkali-catalyzed transesterification in different types of reactors. The most widely used for this purpose are those that promote the mixing of reagents more effectively, such as continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), bubble column reactor (BCR) and reactive distillation column (RDC). Because of the impurities present in the reaction, numerous post-production operations are indispensable to obtain a high quality biodiesel, generally accounting for more than half of the process operating costs. There is an inherent need to study and evaluate processes that promote the reduction of these operations and, consequently, the associated economic costs. To improve the process it is necessary to use mechanisms that perform the hydrodynamic cavitation of the fluid by way of the emulsification of two immiscible liquids, promoting a maximization of the reaction rate due to the improvement of the mass transfer of the reaction. The present research proposal intends to analyze the use of the hydrodynamics of the reagent fluid using a new reactor design, which aims to increase the surface area of contact between the fluids through the atomization of one of them.
