RESUMO:

Global water resources appear to be plentiful. However, only a very small portion of the world's freshwater actually is accessible for human consumption and for maintaining the activities inherent in the current lifestyle. Conflicts over water have been pronounced over the last few years and forecasts from world authorities point to an unpromising future for all. This reality is aggravated by climate change and the pollution of freshwater sources. In view of the worrying context, the scientific community looks to the seas, oceans and other reservoirs of water with high salt concentration, proposing desalination systems of medium and high demands, developing more efficient processes, which are categorized in thermal operations or by membranes. Nevertheless, the researchers are emphatic in stating that small volumes of fresh water required by isolated rural communities can be efficiently served by solar distillation systems whose operation and maintenance are easy and cheap and use a clean energy source , free and abundant in many regions of the planet. The reality of drought that plagues the Brazilian semi-arid region has led the Federal Government of this country to launch the Fresh Water Program, with the proposal to manage, recover and deploy 1209 desalination systems in the region that shelters almost 12% of its population and covers approximately 12 % of national territory. However, after seven years of launching the goal, only 47.6% of systems are really operational. Corroborating the need for desalination in the semi-arid region and the proposal of potabilization systems for rural communities, the region has a privileged position from the point of view of solar irradiation. This makes solar stills a promising alternative for supplying drinking water for cooking and cooking, increasing the availability of accessible technologies for coping with drought. Given the low productivity of solar stills, which makes it unpopular, many researchers study new designs of equipment, constituent materials of the radiation collecting plate and improvement in the thermal properties of the brine in order to increase the rate of evaporation and, consequently, distillate production. Finally, the objective of this work is to study alternative and also technological materials to increase the efficiency of solar distillers. The cases investigated in this dissertation presented promising results, even in the evaporation of high salinity waters, providing subsidiary information for the future construction of low cost equipment and facilitated operation, making possible its real use in the Brazilian semiarid.
