RESUMO:

Textile industry is one of the main wastewater generators due to its high water consumption during the so-called wet processing. The presence of dyestuff in these wastewaters is the most alarming factor regarding water pollution. This is because they have a recalcitrant nature and resist chemical and biological attacks; also, they give color to water bodies, lowering light penetration and can be toxic to aquatic life and human.  The high production of solid waste is another major problem in this sector. These materials have great potential to be used as inputs for the production of other with higher added value for water pollution control. Using adsorption as route for textile wastewater treatment is considered a good option since the absorbent shows many favorable characteristics, such as chemical, thermal and mechanical stability as well  as high surface area. Activated carbons (ACs) stand out as the most widely used adsorbent due to the high adsorption of organic molecules. Considering the presented context, the present work aims to produce  ACs , using solid textile waste (100% cotton snips from a local textile industry) as a source of carbon. For this purpose, the chemical activation method with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and carbonization in a pyrolyser reactor will be used. Theses materials will be properly characterized and the one with most favorable characteristics will be evaluated with respect to the adsorption efficiency of a textile dye present in a synthetic effluent.
