RESUMO:

Biopolymer films have several industrial applications because they are environmentally sustainable, such as food coatings. Cassava starch is a biopolymer easily obtained after plastification and denaturation of the native starch. However, thermoplastic starch has the limitation of being mostly water soluble and to own low mechanical and thermal properties when compared to synthetic polymers. The improvement of these properties was proposed in this research from the addition of 5%, by mass, of clay in relation to the dry mass of biopolymer. The superficial compatibilization of the clay with the biopolymer matrix was performed by ion exchange with a synergistic mixture of three types of surfactants (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, sodium dodecyl sulfate and ethoxylated lauryl alcohol). Starch films based on natural or modified clay were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and AFM. The improvement of the physicochemical properties of the obtained films was characterized by the water vapor permeability, mechanical properties, transparency, thermal stability and solubility in water. The modified clay reduced 45% of the water vapor permeability of the starch film as well as 30% of the maximum dissolution. There was no significant difference in the color shade of the starch film in the presence of the natural or modified clay.
