SUMMARY:

The anti-inflammatory properties of Licania rigida Benth have been evaluated as an alternative drug approach to treating several inflammatory processes. Thereby, in this study, aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of L.rigida leaves were analyzed regarding their phytocomposition by Ultra-Fast Liquid Chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometry, and their anti-inflammatory properties were assessed by an in vitro and in vivo inflammation model using Lipopolysaccharide as an inducer of the inflammatory process . The phytochemical profile indicated gallic acid and ellagic acid as an important constituent in both extracts, while isovitexin, ferulate, some bulky amino acids (e.g. phenylalanine), pheophorbide, lactic acid and pyridoxine were detected in hydroalcoholic extracts. The extracts displayed the ability to modulate the in vitro and in vivo inflammatory response by changing the pro-inflammatory (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) cytokines secretion, also inhibiting the PD-1 secretion and NO production, as well as, inhibiting leukocyte migration. Overall, for the first time, it was characterized by putative compounds from Licania rigida Benth leaves, which can modulate the inflammatory process. Therefore, the data suggests this plant as an option to obtain extracts for phytotherapic formulations to treat and/or prevent chronic diseases.
